JMW Turner’s painting, ‘Rome, from Mount Aventine’, is currently being exhibited at the Palazzo Rondinini in Rome for three days. The panoramic view of the Italian capital was created in the 19th century based on sketches made during Turner's time in Rome.
The artwork has been remarkably well preserved and is believed to have never undergone restoration, retaining traces of fingerprints and brush hairs. It previously sold for more than £30 million at auction. Sotheby’s anticipates it could fetch around £50 million when it goes under the hammer in London this December, with Sarah Rainsford providing a close-up look at the piece.
