As the new hotly anticipated Gears prequel approaches its October 6th release date, I'd thought I'd share some of my thoughts on the open beta that came out a few months ago.
Well, that Gears: E-Day open multiplayer beta was surprisingly awesome to play. That spin-off Gears of War Judgment and Gears 4-5 were lackluster titles in the franchise, but now that I've played the multiplayer modes of this new prequel game, I gotta say I think The Coalition have nailed this at least on a multiplayer level.
Deathmatch and Horde modes, respectively, play out a lot smoother/tighter with these new fluid movement mechanics that make playing the game feel faster and more intense. It's something I've been asking for in this franchise since the very beginning. Your character is too much of a tank clunkily moving cover to cover in previous titles. You felt too weighted down when fighting in higher difficulties trying to avoid getting one-shotted by a gnasher shotgun.
Just basing my weekend of playtime with this demo, I can already say if this game wasn't Day One on Xbox Game Pass, I'd absolutely buy it on launch in October. It's just that fun to play.
The deathmatch mode was a tighter, smaller, back to basics team vs. team sweaty multiplayer mode that doesn't try to do too much in any given match.
The highlight for me was the new Horde mode (Horde Siege is a sub mode under it) because goddamn was that fun as hell. It gets so chaotic during those waves that it just becomes a complete frantic mess trying to revive your teammates, collect your currency off the corpses, and stay alive long enough to get to the higher waves using enemy super weapons. The new mod upgrade system for your specific classes is a really nice touch because it incentives you to keep coming back to this mode to increase your damage and unlock more weapons and abilities to help out your fellow co-op teammates. There's so many unlocks to work through that I feel like will keep me coming back to it to see how powerful I can get in the higher waves. Most Horde modes don't offer an upgrade of your character with modded weapons that stay permanent as you level up. Normally, Horde modes just start you from scratch once you log off from the mode, so this is a cool new addition to that mode in my view.
I am reallyy looking forward to story campaign more now that I experienced the better movement system in gameplay. I think Gears is back, baby!
Did you play the open beta? What did you think of it? Are you excited about this new Gears game? Do you think it'll be a win for Microsoft/Xbox the brand so sorely needs? Discuss down in the comments if you'd like!
