A Eurocopter AS32 helicopter crashed Sunday afternoon while fighting the Dome Fire in California’s Yosemite National Park, resulting in the deaths of both pilots. The aircraft, owned by contractor Precision, was performing a water bucket operation dropping water on the fire when it went down southeast of Lake Ostrander. The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection identified one of the pilots as Greg King, who had previously worked on Alaskan wildfires.
The Dome Fire, which ignited on September 15, has burned more than 3,200 acres and was 15% contained as of Monday, with nearly 600 ground and air personnel assigned. Investigations by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are underway to determine the cause of the crash. Yosemite National Park remains open, though some trails are currently closed.
