Just got out of the new Resident Evil movie.
Really entertaining horror flick from Zach Cregger that leans surprisingly more into horror comedy than I was expecting. It mostly works, but it's almost jarring at seeing a Resident Evil adaptation be so comedic.
There's very little iconography here as a Resident Evil adaptation, which was a bummer to see as a fan of the game franchise but at the end of the day I just wanted to walk away asking myself "is this a good horror movie?" And the answer is obviously yes, which isn't surprising coming from this director's last two films.
It's just a stripped-down survival horror tale about an average dumb guy trying to complete a job and survive the night while everything is trying to kill him, stumbling his way from one creepy scenario after another. It's a cool little diversion from the main Resident Evil lore/characters that works as a standalone story, but probably not something that is sustainable as a big franchise without touching on aspects that fans truly want out of this.
One of my critiques of this movie is that it's set around and in Raccoon City, yet you don't get the sense that it's even a character in its own story. It's not this prominent location filled with backstory or lore. It's just some vague nondescript location that has a virus running amok in it. Also, I wasn't a fan of the T-Virus not being the thing that infects everything. Instead, it's this no-name tentacle virus that sometimes resembles the Uroboros virus from RE 4-5. This movie is playing it fast and loose with what it wants to include and not include in this "adaptation." It's sure to be a pretty divisive interpretation and deservedly so. Pretty silly not to even include the iconic logo of the evil corporation from the games in the sets/environment even though they only name drop it one time in the film.
I still think it's worth going to see in theaters. It's a fun ride overall.
