New York City Public Schools is implementing a ban on the use of artificial intelligence for students in grades 2 through 8, beginning this academic year. This impacts over half a million students and teachers within the nation’s largest school district. Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated that the city will spend the next year studying the impact of generative AI technology. The ban applies to pre-schoolers through middle schoolers. Education advocates have previously pushed for guardrails and formal guidance on AI use in schools.
