The annual Defcon hacker conference badges have historically featured elaborate electronic designs, but this year's iteration includes an innovative open-source chip called the Baochip-1x. Developed by Andrew “bunnie” Huang over three years, the chip aims to advance security transparency and trustworthiness in computing. Its core module can be removed after the conference and used as a hardware security token.
The Baochip’s design is unique; it allows researchers to inspect its internal silicon structures using infrared light – a departure from traditional computer chips encased in opaque plastic. Huang collaborated with Crossbar, leveraging their manufacturing run to produce both a Crossbar microprocessor chip and his own version utilizing a RISC-V core. Approximately 27,000 badges will be distributed at Defcon this year, marking the chip’s first major release.
